Maximizing team potential: Tips for developing career plans
As a manager, one of the most meaningful ways you can support your team is by helping them create career plans. A career plan can give your team members clarity on their professional goals, set expectations for performance, and most importantly, show them that you care about their professional development.
Here are our top tips when it comes to building effective career plans.
Make a commitment
It can be scary to commit to a career plan, but remember, it's okay to adjust or change your goals later on. Givingย your employees a clear career goal to work toward will provide motivation and focus. While you should take time to build out career plans, it's important to not procrastinate on them. Take a moment to reflect and strategize but don't spend too long trying to perfect the plans, since it's also important to move forward and execute them.ย ย
Position yourself for success
A common mistake is setting a goal that's too ambitious and ultimately impossible to achieve. Goals that are too ambitious can cause your team to feel discouraged. It's better to have an employee make progress at a slower pace than to give up altogether. To increase the likelihood of success, break large goals into smaller, manageable chunks to make them attainable.
Leverage the power of mentorship
Achieving meaningful goals takes hard work and determination. Having a mentor or coach who can provide guidance and support throughout the process can be extremely valuable to help you navigate and overcome challenges that you might not have known how to tackle on your own. Set your team members up for success by connecting them with experienced mentors. This can be easily done by pairing a newer employee with a more experienced member of the team.ย
What is ChatGPT and why managers should embrace it
The tech industry has been hit with a wave of layoffs, with companies like Amazon and Salesforce announcing major workforce reductions recently. It's natural to wonder if the golden age of tech giants is coming to an end. While this may be true for some companies, there are new and exciting technologies emerging that have the potential to transform the way we work and live.
One amazing tech trend that's poised to transform the world is ChatGPT. We've asked our CEO, Lewis Lin, to tell us more.
What is ChatGPT?
Lewis: ChatGPT is a chatbot that can function as a fast and knowledgeable virtual assistant. It can understand and respond to text written in English. It has been taught using lots of examples of conversation, so it can understand how people talk and respond in a way that sounds natural.ย Best of all, it's currently free!
What can I do with ChatGPT?
Lewis:ย ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can help you with a wide range of tasks, like writing content, making decisions, and conducting market research.ย It's designed to perform almost any task that a knowledge worker can do, and often with more accuracy and efficiency.ย ChatGPT is also pre-trained on a mountain of data so it canย provideย you access toย large amounts of knowledge to help you make more informed decisions.ย
Why would I want to use it?
Lewis:ย It'll save you time and make you more efficient.ย For example, research that used to take months can now be completed in minutes.ย Marketing content that took me 4 to 8 hours to write,ย now only takes me 45 minutes.
Is using ChatGPT plagiarism?
Lewis:ย While ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it's important to use it responsibly. It should be thought of as a tool to help you be more efficient with your work, like a calculator or computer.ย The final product should be unique and not just a copy of what ChatGPT produces.
Will ChatGPT change the future of work?
Lewis:ย In the future of work, ChatGPT will play a critical role in the way we work. It has the potential to improve work quality and speed up the time it takes to complete tasks. Those who embrace it and use it to complement their work will have a significant advantage over those who don't.ย
What skills should I look for when hiring for talent that can make the most out of ChatGPT?
Lewis:ย Here are a couple of skills I'd look for:
Adaptability
ChatGPT will challenge conventional ways of working. Talent who areย open, flexible, and adaptable will have a smoother transition to ChatGPT. It will enable them to adjust to this new world of work and quickly learn how to use the new technology.ย
Critical thinking
ChatGPT can sometimes misunderstandย the context andย generate output that may contain errors. Those who can evaluate ChatGPT's output critically can better identify and correct any errors generated by ChatGPT and double-check for accuracy.ย
With ChatGPT, will we ever have to write again?
Lewis:ย I firmly believe in the saying writing is thinking. Ultimately, ChatGPT won't replace the need for writing, as writing is an essential part of the thinking process. But it will definitely be a useful tool to assist in the writing process and make it more efficient.
How to create subfolders in ManageBetter
Many of you have asked us for a way to organize your review phrases into subfolders andย it's one of the most in-demand features! While we don't have this feature today, there's a simple workaround to help you achieve the same effect.
Let's say you have an employee called Dwight Schrute. You want to create three subfolders to contain phrases that describe his:
Execution
Expertise
Integrity
You can easily simulate subfolders by creating three different folders with the following labels:
You can use the same strategy if you wanted to organize your reviewย phrases by quarter:
It's that simple. You can now simulate subfolders and keep your employee's feedback organized and easy to find.ย
